Your complete guide to getting around Accra - from airport transfers to local transport

Getting Around Accra

Accra's transport mix is dominated by tro-tros (shared minibuses) and ride-hailing apps like Bolt and Uber. Tro-tros are the cheapest way to move around. But routes are unwritten and you'll need to shout your stop, use the Google Maps transit layer to guess the right line. For comfort, Bolt is usually half the price of a street taxi and spares you the haggle. Airport-area hotels often run shuttle vans. If yours doesn't, the ride-hail pick-up zone is clearly marked outside Arrivals, skip the unofficial taxi touts who swarm the exit doors. First-timers should download the TroTro app or ask a local to flag the correct minibus color for their destination. Wrong colors can dump you miles off-course. Traffic is brutal from 7, 9 a.m. and 4, 7 p.m.; if you must cross the city then, ride-hailing's in-app fare locks in before the crawl begins. After dark, stick to registered taxis or ride-hail, tro-tros thin out and stops become poorly lit.
